Background

The Energy Helix was amongst the first tranche of Helix communities launched by Crowdhelix in early 2013, and is led by the world-renowned academic institution Cardiff University.

Scope

The Energy Helix provides an Open Innovation platform for experts seeking international collaborators to carry out research and innovation across a wide array of energy technologies (both non-nuclear and nuclear), including:

  • Concentrated solar power
  • Photovoltaics
  • Wind, ocean, hydro, & geothermal energy
  • Bioenergy
  • Fuel cells and hydrogen
  • Electricity grids
  • Energy storage
  • Energy efficiency
  • Nuclear energy (Fission & Fusion), including the EURATOM programme
  • Demand-side solutions

Policy

The Energy Helix is also closely integrated with the activities of the Smart Cities, Digital, and Climate Helixes, and is also strategically oriented towards two of Horizon Europe’s Missions: “Adaptation to climate change including societal transformation”, and “Climate-neutral and smart cities”.

Through promoting pan-European collaboration across the energy sector, and with various related disciplines including telecoms, ICT, climate change, and public policy, Crowdhelix aims to support global R&I efforts to help secure, store, transmit, and utilise increasingly clean and affordable energy supplies.
