The institute is attached to one of the large teaching hospitals in the Barcelona area; the Germans Trias University Hospital (HUGTIP), and is located at the biomedical campus that surrounds it, the Can Ruti Biomedical Campus. The Institute is considered a research centre of excellence by the Generalitat de Catalunya of the CERCA system and is also accredited as a centre of excellence by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III (ISCIII), being in charge of coordinating the management and scientific strategy of the Campus, working in close collaboration with the other centres in the campus.
