Project Proposal

Headache disorders are a major public health concern and one of the most important causes of disability worldwide. Globally, one in every six persons suffer from the symptoms of a headache on any given day (15.8%), and the total prevalence of active headache disorders adds up to more than 50% of the global population. Consequently, headache disorders are extremely costly for society— accumulating to a total annual cost of €173 billion for the EU population—and severely effects the social and working life of the individual.

We aim to develop a comprehensive research database for headache disorders and an advanced data analytics platform that enable linking of data and use of high-dimensional and machine learning models.

We also aim to digitize treatment strategies, develop decisions support systems for healthcare professionals and policymakers, enable precision medicine and individualized treatment strategies, and actively promote the opportunity for industry collaboration, innovation, and privately funded trials.

The database will integrate and link health-related real-world data—collected from multiple wearable devices and smartphone health applications, including a tailor-made headache diary application developed by members of the consortium—and data from hospital and public health registries, prescription registries, genomics, biobank data, population statistic, and clinical -and experimental data.

The call specifically ask for international solutions for international data sharing and data management across borders to the benefit of patients and health care professionals. To achieve this we want to recruit experts data security, European health registries, citizen trust, and especially expert on European platforms the European Health Data Space (EHDS), the 1+Million Genomes initiative (1+MG) and the European Open Science Cloud.

We also want to collaborate with health innovators, both large and SMEs that are interested in patient and data-driven healthcare technology development for headache disorders.
